Happy composting. These mini composting towers, made from repurposed lengths of scrap drainpipes, are ideal for feeding your plants if you don’t have room for a compost heap. There are lots more green and sustainable gardening tips in my latest book called ‘Grow it, Don’t Throw it.’ The book is published by DK. It comes out on the 8th of October but you can pre-order your copy now. I think it would make a great Christmas present for anyone who loves gardening, even if I say so myself. Thanks so

Are your veggie beds and flower beds ready for the growing season? Or are they covered in weeds? The best way to prepare your beds is to cover them with some recycled cardboard followed by about 5 to 10cm of compost. This is the no-dig method of gardening. Avoid digging over the soil in your flower and vegetable beds as this will increase the amount of weeds. It will bring dormant weed seed to near the surface where they are more likely to germinate. And if your spade slices through a perennial

One from the vaults. I believe I originally filmed this in 2022! How to grow delicious and healthy sunflower microgreens from a packet of sunflower seeds bought from the supermarket. As featured in my book Grow Your Groceries. Microgreens are just the emerging shoots and leaves of an edible plants. Sunflower microgreens are one of my favourite types of microgreens. They have quite a sweet, nutty flavour. Give them a try and see what you think.

I love keyhole raised beds. Having your compost heap in the middle of the raised bed is such a great idea. The material used to make the compost structure needs to be permeable (I used a scrap bit of chicken wire) so that the decomposing compost material can gradually leach out into the soil. This reduces the need to fertilise and water your plants as it’s constantly fed with organic nutrients from the compost. The worms will also move in and out of the central compost, helping to relocate the o

Lawn aeration using a plank and walking in a very silly way. Lawns benefit from aeration (creating holes in the lawn) as it breaks up compaction and improves drainage. Grass roots are fairly shallow so you only need to penetrate down a few cms to reach the root zone of the grass plants. Aerating a lawn can also help prevent moss forming on the lawn. Moss can smother out the grass and then die back leaving you with bare muddy patches. Aerating a lawn gives room for grass roots to grow. It will ma

Here is my Head Gardener’s tip for you… 1000s of bees and frogs die in the bottom of watering cans each year. They enter the watering can and get trapped and drown. However, it is easy to prevent this. You can of course just ensure you have no water left in the bottom of your watering can when you’ve finished watering. But that can be a waste of water if the plants don’t need it. Alternatively, pushing a plastic pot into the watering can entrance will prevent frogs entering. Placing a saucer of

Disposing of bindweed can be difficult because the fresh roots will regrow if added directly to compost. And it’s not good to add it to landfill. But you can dry out the roots in the sun for a few weeks until the bindweed roots have completly desiccated and then add it back to the compost. Bindweed root shouldn’t regrow if it has been dried out completely. I’ve built myself a drying rack for this purpose, which I also use for drying my onions.
